BIOS Hosts Gala Event on November 9th
With the start of its 110-year anniversary just a few months away, and the recent installation of Dr. William Curry as the new President and Director, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) has more than one reason to celebrate. Given the coincident timing of these two momentous occasions, BIOS is pulling out all the stops for its 2012 Gala Celebration on Friday, November 9 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess hotel.
The black-tie celebration is being hosted by Mr. Brian Duperreault, Chairman, and the Board of Trustees of BIOS. Speaking to the impetus for an event of such significant proportions, Mr. Duperreault remarked that, “We’re simultaneously welcoming Bill Curry–an internationally-recognized scientist–as our new leader and celebrating 110 years of excellence in ocean science research and education. BIOS stands at an exciting new threshold and I’m gratified to see so many friends in Bermuda affirm their interest and support.”
The evening’s highlight will be guest speaker, Dr. Sylvia Earle, a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and visionary leader in marine exploration. A longtime friend and supporter of BIOS, Dr. Earle will comment on the history and importance of science-based local and regional conservation initiatives (including Bermuda Blue Halo and the Sargasso Sea Alliance) and her hopes for the future of ocean research and protection. While in Bermuda, Dr. Earle will be speaking at two local schools to share her passion for scientific discovery with students and teachers.
Susan Frith, member of the event’s Volunteer Organizing Committee, expressed her excitement about the Gala Celebration by saying, “Bermuda is so fortunate to have a world class scientific community on our island, and the both the corporate community and local residents realize this and enthusiastically support BIOS. The response to the 2012 Gala has been wonderful. We look forward to a very special evening.”
Tables and individual seats are still available for the event, but are selling out quickly. For more information about the 2012 BIOS Gala Celebration, or to reserve your table/seat, contact Vanessa Shorto at 297-1880 x204 or via email at Vanessa.Shorto@bios.edu.
