ASU BIOS Celebrates World Ocean Day with an Open House
On June 7th and 8th, ASU BIOS brought together leading ocean scientists, elected officials, community leaders and corporate partners for a symposium, community reception, and open house to honor World Ocean Day and celebrate over 120 years of marine research. The symposium showcased innovations and discoveries in marine science that contribute to a thriving future for people and planet. This included presentations and panel discussions about cutting-edge research, the role of ocean research in climate change mitigation and what this means for the future.
During our open house, our research staff shared their work and answered questions from the public. Ocean enthusiasts of all ages toured the facilities and our research vessel, the R/V Atlantic Explorer. Members of the public participated in interactive ocean science exhibits and demos and had the chance to learn about our many programs offered through ASU BIOS.
New scholarship opportunities for students from Bermuda seeking an education at Arizona State University were also announced last weekend. ASU will award up to five full-tuition undergraduate scholarships annually for Bermudian students interested in studying in person in Arizona under any available ASU program. Eligible students will be selected based on both high performance in previous academic work and financial need.
Additionally, ASU has created a scholarship fund for all other Bermudian students that will provide tuition awards to reduce the cost of attendance in person to half of the standard international student tuition rate, or reduce the academic year tuition rate for full-time students in undergraduate online programs.
The ASU Foundation is currently seeking philanthropic support to supplement the scholarship programs to help cover other expenses for Bermuda students attending ASU.
ASU BIOS will continue to work with Bermuda College on appropriate pathway programs.

ASU offers degrees to shape thriving ocean futures
Arizona State University recently launched four new ocean-focused degree programs within the College of Global Futures — a Bachelor of Science in ocean futures, a Bachelor of Science in ocean futures with a concentration in coastal and marine sciences, an online Master of Science in coastal and marine science and management, and a PhD in ocean futures.
Students have access to multiple experiential learning opportunities at BIOS, and our courses in coral reef ecology, marine invertebrate zoology, and scientific diving methods have been integrated into ASU’s curriculum.
